Applying for a job when your CV is missing skills

Listen and Learn
You may have seen your dream job at a company you would love to work for, but your skills don’t match all that are required in the job description.  Here are our tips to help you in that situation.

Missing skills will usually trigger an instant stop to the hire process, but sometimes a company will consider a candidate with transferable skills and an appetite to learn quickly while in the job.
If you don’t know Hadoop but you are knowledgeable about other languages (Java especially!) you could get a foot in the door. Or, lacking the experience of directly managing people, can be countered by examples of leading on projects.

With all that in mind, here’s how to tweak your CV to give you the best chance of getting a job interview:

  • Showcase and give examples of your ability to adapt and learn.
  • Demonstrate skills that are close to the ones required and your experience with them.
  • Be positive and show your willingness to collaborate.

Your chances of being called for an interview might be slim, but with these tips you still have a chance if the employer is flexible.
